If Peter and Jared studied French together at college, why does the phrase, "We both had Mademoiselle Stein" suddenly take on a very different meaning?!

I am reserving the full extent of my judgement on Peter and Jared's history until we've seen the flashback episode. Seeing as the writers haven't been able to get anything straight so far, I'm giving them this opportunity to sort things out once and for all. No doubt I will have PLENTY to say then...!
